"Abstract Many anticipatory systems cannot in\nthemselves act meaningfully or represent\nintentionally. This stems largely from the derivative\nnature of their functionality. All current artificial\ncontrol systems, and many living systems such as\norgans and cellular parts of organisms derive any\nintentionality they might have from their designers\nor possessors. Derivative functionality requires\nreference to some external autonomously functional\nsystem, and derivative intentionality similarly\nrequires reference to an external autonomous\nintentional system. The importance of autonomy\ncan be summed up in the following slogan: No\nmeaning without intention; no intention without\nfunction; no function without autonomy. This paper\ndevelops the role of autonomy to show how learning\nnew tasks is facilitated by autonomy, and further by\nrepresentational capacities that are functional for\nautonomy.\n"^^ .
