?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=The+relationship+between+corpus+callosum+size+and+forebrain+volume&rft.creator=Jancke%2C+L.&rft.creator=Staiger%2C+J.F.&rft.creator=Schlaug%2C+G.&rft.creator=Huang%2C+Y.&rft.creator=Steinmetz%2C+H.&rft.subject=Brain+Imaging&rft.subject=Neuroanatomy&rft.description=Using+high-resolution+in+vivo+magnetic+resonance+morphometry+we+measured+forebrain+volume+(FBV)%2C+midsagittal+size+of+the+corpus+callosum+(CC)+and+four+CC+subareas+in+120+young+and+healthy+adults+(49+women%2C+71+men).+We+found+moderate+linear+and+quadratic+correlations%2C+indicating+that+the+CC+and+all+CC+subareas+increase+with+FBV+both+in+men+and+women+(multiple+r2+ranging+from+0.10+to+0.28).+Allometric+equations+revealed+that+these+increases+were+less+than+proportional+to+FBV+(r2+ranging+from+0.02+to+0.30).+Absolute+CC+measurements%2C+as+well+as+CC+subareas+relative+to+total+CC+or+FBV+(the+latter+measures+termed+the+CC+ratios)%2C+were+further+analyzed+with+regard+to+possible+effects+of+handedness%2C+gender%2C+or+handedness+by+gender+interaction.+Contrary+to+previous+reports%2C+left-handers+did+not+show+larger+CC+measurements+compared+to+right-handers.+The+only+apparent+influence+of+gender+was+on+the+CC+ratios%2C+which+were+larger+in+women.+However%2C+smaller+brains+had+larger+CC+ratios+which+were+mainly+independent+of+gender%2C+a+result+of+the+less+than+proportional+increase+of+callosal+size+with+FBV.+We+suggest+that+the+previously+described+gender+differences+in+CC+anatomy+may+be+better+explained+by+an+underlying+effect+of+brain+size%2C+with+larger+brains+having+relatively+smaller+callosa.+This+lends+empirical+support+to+the+hypothesis+that+brain+size+may+be+an+important+factor+influencing+interhemispheric+connectivity+and+lateralization&rft.date=1997-02&rft.type=Journal+(Paginated)&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F85%2F3%2Fcc-brain.pdf&rft.identifier=++Jancke%2C+L.+and+Staiger%2C+J.F.+and+Schlaug%2C+G.+and+Huang%2C+Y.+and+Steinmetz%2C+H.++(1997)+The+relationship+between+corpus+callosum+size+and+forebrain+volume.++%5BJournal+(Paginated)%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F85%2F
