--- abstract: 'Introduction: There is a risk of 1 - 2 per 1000 recipients receiving contaminated blood with viral, bacterial and parasitic agents.TTI’S are the most commonly encountered complications in transfusion medicine. The objective of the study was to determine the seroprevalence of TTI’s among blood donors, who represent healthy population at large. Materials & methods: A total of 33,658 blood units were received from voluntary and replacement donors over a period of 5 years. Surface antigen of HBV and antibodies to HIV and HCV were determined using ELISA. Syphilis was detected using TPHA test. Results: 947 (2.81%) blood units tested positive for HBV, HCV, HIV and / or syphilis. Overall prevalence was HBV – 1.77%, HCV – 0.13%, HIV – 0.63% and Syphilis – 0.28%. Nine (0.03%) donors had coinfections. Conclusion: The screening of blood donors is the corner stone in assuring the safety of blood transfusion.' altloc: - http://www.ojhas.org/issue38/2011-2-7.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - amrutakb@yahoo.co.in - ~ - ~ creators_name: - family: Amrutha Kumari given: B honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Deepa given: S honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Venkatesha given: D honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2011-07-30 date_type: published datestamp: 2012-11-09 17:37:19 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/79/63 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: 0 edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: - BS Kakkilaya editors_name: - family: Kakkilaya given: Srinivas honourific: Dr lineage: ~ eprint_status: archive eprintid: 7963 fileinfo: application/pdf;http://cogprints.org/7963/1/2011%2D2%2D7.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: ~ item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: Transfusion Transmitted Infections; HBV; HCV; HIV; Syphilis lastmod: 2012-11-09 17:37:19 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 2 pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: "1.\tMahmud Z.
