--- abstract: 'Objective: Drug utilization pattern identifies the problems that arise from the drug usage in health care delivery system and highlights the current approaches to the rational use of drugs. The present study evaluates the utilization pattern of antimicrobial agents in hospital deliveries of different setups. Methodology: Two hundred hospital deliveries from a government hospital GroupI (G-I) and 100 cases each from two private hospitals Group II & Group III (G II & G III) were studied. Groups, drugs, numbers of antimicrobials used, duration with indication for their use were the criteria taken into consideration for comparison. Results: Beta-lactams, nitroimidazoles and fluoroquinolones were commonly prescribed groups of antimicrobials. The duration of prophylaxis was 6.73±1.79, 5.77±1.10 &5.14±1.53 days in three groups respectively which was significantly different (p<0.01). Caesarian section, episiotomy were the commonest prophylactic indications. Conclusion: The present study calls for an urgent review on rational use of antimicrobial for prophylaxis.' altloc: - http://www.ojhas.org/issue32/2009-4-10.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - ~ - ~ - ~ - ushachidu@yahoo.com creators_name: - family: Adiga given: MNS honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Alwar given: MC honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Pai given: MRSM honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Adiga given: US honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2010-04-30 date_type: published datestamp: 2010-09-13 03:54:02 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/69/81 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: 0 edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: - Kakkilaya BS editors_name: - family: Kakkilaya given: Srinivas honourific: Dr lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 6981 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/6981/1/2009%2D4%2D10.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'Antimicrobial agents, Infection, Prophylaxis, Hospital deliveries' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:42 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 4 pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences publisher: Dr. BS Kakkilaya refereed: TRUE referencetext: "1.\tThe selection of essential drugs.
