--- abstract: 'Background: Glutathione S Transferase (GST) has been involved in detoxification process in the liver and its activity has been shown to be increased in alcohol abusers. In the current work we measured the GST activity, total thiol status, AST, ALT, and direct bilirubin in chronic alcohol abusers before and 30 days after alcohol abstinence and lifestyle modification. Methods: Serum and urine GST activity and total thiol status were determined using spectrophotometric methods and serum transaminases were determined using clinical chemistry analyzer. Results: We found, significant increase in serum and urine GST (p<0.001), AST (p<0.001), ALT (p<0.001), and decrease in total thiol status (p<0.001) in chronic alcohol abusers. GST activity significantly decreased (p<0.001) and total thiol status were improved significantly (p<0.001) 30 days after alcohol abstinence and lifestyle modification. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary data to suggest the role of GST as prognostic indicator of alcohol abstinence with possible trend towards an improvement in liver function.' altloc: - http://www.ojhas.org/issue29/2009-1-5.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - sm_manjunath@rediffmail.com - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ creators_name: - family: Muttigi given: MS honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Prabhu given: LS honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Kedage given: V honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Prakash given: M honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Shetty given: JK honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Virupaksha given: D honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Bhandary given: PV honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2009-05-05 date_type: published datestamp: 2009-07-02 01:45:52 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/65/63 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: - Kakkilaya BS editors_name: - family: Kakkilaya given: Srinivas honourific: Dr lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 6563 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/6563/1/2009%2D1%2D5.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: Glutathione S Transferase; Total thiols; Alcoholic liver disease; Alcohol abstinence lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:22 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 1 pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences publisher: Dr. BS Kakkilaya refereed: TRUE referencetext: "1.Kensler TW.
