--- abstract: 'Lesions of the medial preoptic area (MPO) were produced through permanently indwelling electrodes 24 hr prior to parturition in pregnant rats, or 24 hr prior to donor-placenta presentation in virgin rats determined in a pretest to be placentophages. The lesions had no disruptive effect on placentophagia in the virgin females. However, MPO lesions did delay the onset of placentophagia, pup-retrieval, and nestbuilding in some parturient rats. In others, lesions produced an impairment (in latency and quality) only of nest-building. None showed any impairment of pup-licking, or in the clear tendency to leave excreted waste away from the gathered pups. These results suggest the possibility of at least semi-independent mechanisms for the various components of maternal behavior.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - noonan@canisius.edu - kristal@buffalo.edu creators_name: - family: Noonan given: Michael honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Kristal given: Mark B honourific: Dr. lineage: '' date: 1979 date_type: published datestamp: 2008-09-19 13:55:51 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/62/13 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 6213 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/6213/1/MPO.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'medial preoptic area, hypothalamus, maternal behavior, placentophagia, parturition, lesions' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:12 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 6 pagerange: 1197-1202 pubdom: TRUE publication: Physiology & Behavior publisher: Pergamon Press and Brain Research Publ. refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 29 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2008-09-19 13:55:51 subjects: - psy-bio - physio-psy - behav-neuro-sci succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: "Effects of Medial Preoptic Lesions on\r\nPlacentophagia and on the Onset of Maternal\r\nBehavior in the Rat" type: journalp userid: 88 volume: 22
