--- abstract: 'The enactive approach to perception is generating an extensive amount of interest and debate in the cognitive sciences. One particularly contentious issue has been how best to characterize the perceptual experiences reported by subjects who have mastered the skillful use of a perceptual supplementation (PS) device. This paper argues that this issue cannot be resolved with the use of third-person methodologies alone, but that it requires the development of a phenomenological pragmatics. In particular, it is necessary that the experimenters become skillful in the use of PS devices themselves. The "Enactive Torch" is proposed as an experimental platform which is cheap, non-intrusive and easy to replicate, so as to enable researchers to corroborate reported experiences with their own phenomenology more easily.' altloc: - http://cogslib.informatics.scitech.susx.ac.uk/csr_abs.php?type=csrp&num=593&id=10594 chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: November 2007 conference: Enactive Interfaces confloc: 'Grenoble, France' contact_email: ~ creators_id: - t.froese@gmail.com - a.spiers@bristol.ac.uk creators_name: - family: Froese given: Tom honourific: Mr lineage: '' - family: Spiers given: Adam honourific: Mr lineage: '' date: 2007-11 date_type: published datestamp: 2008-01-08 00:29:59 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/58/89 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 5889 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/5889/1/csrp593.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'enaction, phenomenology, perceptual supplementation, sensory substition, enactive perception' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:57:02 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 105-108 pubdom: TRUE publication: ~ publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: "Bach-y-Rita, P., Collins, C.C., Saunders, F.A., White, B. & Scadden, L.
