--- abstract: 'In this paper, I critically assess the enactive account of visual perception recently defended by Alva Noë (2004). I argue inter alia that the enactive account falsely identifies an object’s apparent shape with its 2D perspectival shape; that it mistakenly assimilates visual shape perception and volumetric object recognition; and that it seriously misrepresents the constitutive role of bodily action in visual awareness. I argue further that noticing an object’s perspectival shape involves a hybrid experience combining both perceptual and imaginative elements – an act of what I call ‘make-perceive.’' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - rbriscoe@gmail.com creators_name: - family: Briscoe given: Robert honourific: Professor lineage: '' date: 2008 date_type: published datestamp: 2007-10-22 10:39:47 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/57/81 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 5781 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/5781/1/VAMP.MS397.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: inpress issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: Enactive Account; Sensorimotor Contingency Theory; P-Properties; Spatial Representation; Object Recognition; Alva Noë; Action-Oriented Representation lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:56:59 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: Forthcoming in 2008. number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Mind and Language publisher: Blackwell refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 25 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-10-22 10:39:47 subjects: - phil-mind - bio-ani-cog - percep-cog-psy - neuro-psy succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: 'Vision, Action, and Make-Perceive' type: journalp userid: 7317 volume: ~
