--- abstract: 'The latency to onset of maternal behavior toward foster pups was examined in maternally-naive female rats treated either with uterine distention, a sham procedure, or no uterine manipulation. Uterine distention was achieved by intrauterine injection of hypertonic saline. The treatments were applied to either cycling, Day 10 pseudopregnant, or Day 11 pseudopregnant-decidualized virgins. The latency to onset of maternal behavior for both pseudopregnant groups was significantly shorter than that for the nonpseudopregnant group, when uterine distention was applied. The results suggest that uterine distention during pregnancy (during high progesterone level) may bring about both pregnancy termination (delivery) and the almost immediate maternal behavior seen at parturition, by the same hormonal mechanism.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - '' - kristal@buffalo.edu creators_name: - family: Graber given: Gary C. honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Kristal given: Mark B. honourific: Dr. lineage: '' date: 1977 date_type: published datestamp: 2007-10-22 10:44:17 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/57/70 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 5770 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/5770/1/uterine.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'uterine distention, maternal behavior, pseudopregnancy, deciduoma, uterus, parturition, cervix. rat' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:56:59 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 1 pagerange: 133-137 pubdom: FALSE publication: Physiology & behavior publisher: Pergamon Press and Brain Research Publ. refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 23 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-10-22 10:44:17 subjects: - psy-bio - behav-neuro-sci - bio-ani-behav succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Uterine distention facilitates the onset of maternal behavior in pseudopregnant but not in cycling rats type: journalp userid: 88 volume: 19
