?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Explorations+of+Space+Shape&rft.creator=Cutzu%2C+Florin&rft.creator=Edelman%2C+Shimon&rft.subject=Cognitive+Psychology&rft.description=Using+a+small+number+of+prototypical+reference+objects+to+span+the+internal+shape+representation+space+has+been+suggested+as+a+general+approach+to+the+problem+of+object+representation+in+vision.+We+have+investigated+the+ability+of+human+subjects+to+form+the+low-dimensional+metric+shape+representation+space+predicted+by+this+approach.+In+each+of+a+series+of+experiments%2C+which+involved+pairwise+similarity+judgment%2C+and+delayed+match+to+sample%2C+subjects+were+confronted+with+several+classes+of+computer-rendered+3D+animal-like+shapes%2C+arranged+in+a+complex+pattern+in+a+common+high-dimensional+parameter+space.+We+combined+response+time+and+error+rate+data+into+a+measure+of+view+similarity%2C+and+submitted+the+resulting+proximity+matrix+to+nonmetric+multidimensional+scaling+(MDS).+In+the+two-dimensional+MDS+solution%2C+views+of+the+same+shape+were+invariably+clustered+together%2C+and%2C+in+each+experiment%2C+the+relative+geometrical+arrangement+of+the+view+clusters+of+the+different+objects+reflected+the+true+low-dimensional+structure+in+parameter+space+(star%2C+triangle%2C+square%2C+line)+that+defined+the+relationships+between+the+stimuli+classes.+These+findings+are+now+used+used+to+guide+the+development+of+a+detailed+computational+theory+of+shape+vision+based+on+similarity+to+prototypes.&rft.date=1995&rft.type=Preprint&rft.type=NonPeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpostscript&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F573%2F2%2F199711007.ps&rft.identifier=++Cutzu%2C+Florin+and+Edelman%2C+Shimon++(1995)+Explorations+of+Space+Shape.++%5BPreprint%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F573%2F
