--- abstract: 'Graham Taylor, director of educational, academic and professional publishing at the Publishers Association, criticises the Research Councils UK (RCUK) proposal to require that the author of every published article based on RCUK-funded research must “self-archive” a supplementary “open access” version on the web so it can be freely read and used by any researcher worldwide whose institution cannot afford the journal in which it was published. The purpose of the RCUK policy is to maximise the usage and impact of research. Taylor argues that it may have an adverse affect on some journals. This critique points out that there is no evidence from 15 years of open-access self-archiving that it has had any adverse affect on journals and a great deal of evidence that it enhances research impact.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: "Graham Taylor, \"Don't tell us where to publish\" Guardian: Research News, Friday July 1, 2005 http://education.guardian.co.uk/elearning/story/0,10577,1519270,00.html" confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - 63 creators_name: - family: Harnad given: Stevan honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2005-07 date_type: published datestamp: 2005-07-09 department: Chaire de recherche du Canada dir: disk0/00/00/44/49 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 4449 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/4449/1/harnad%2Dtaylor.htm|/style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/4449/2/harnad%2Dtaylor.pdf|/style/images/fileicons/other.png;/4449/3/harnad%2Dtaylor.doc full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: Université du Québec à Montréal isbn: ~ ispublished: unpub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'open access, self-archiving, research councils UK, publishing, peer-review, journals' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:56:07 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: ~ pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: ~ refereed: FALSE referencetext: | Harnad, S.
