--- abstract: 'The present study investigates the occurrence of R-plasmid in Salmonella typhi isolates from enteric fever cases in and around Kolkata (1991-2001), India following in vitro conjugation experiments, isolation of plasmid DNAs and agarose gel electrophoretic analysis. The multidrug resistant (MDR) S. typhi strains contained a transferable plasmid conferring resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole and tetracycline. The plasmid encoding ACCoT-resistance of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus vulgaris were conjugative and co-migrated with the plasmid of MDR S. typhi isolates. The antibiotic sensitive S. typhi isolates did not contain any plasmid. Thus the findings of the present study confirmed the instability of the R-plasmid in S. typhi, and that the antibiotic sensitive S. typhi strains acquired the R-plasmid from other enteric bacteria such as E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P.vulgaris to undergo a suitable adaptation for survival in the changing antibiotic environment.' altloc: - http://www.ojhas.org/issue12/2004-4-2.htm chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: - Mandal S - Mandal MD - Pal NK creators_name: - family: Mandal given: Shyamapada honourific: Mr. lineage: '' - family: Mandal given: Manisha Deb honourific: Ms. lineage: '' - family: Pal given: Nishith Kumar honourific: Dr. lineage: '' date: 2005-02 date_type: published datestamp: 2005-04-13 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/41/57 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: - Kakkilaya BS editors_name: - family: Kakkilaya given: Srinivas honourific: Dr. lineage: Bevinje eprint_status: archive eprintid: 4157 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/4157/1/2004%2D4%2D2.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'Salmonella typhi, multidrug resistance, conjugative R-plasmid' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:55:53 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: 4 pagerange: ~ pubdom: TRUE publication: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences publisher: Dr. B.S.
