?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Introduction%3A+The+Fourth+International+Workshop+on+Epigenetic+Robotics&rft.creator=Berthouze%2C+Luc&rft.creator=Metta%2C+Giorgio&rft.subject=Developmental+Psychology&rft.subject=Artificial+Intelligence&rft.subject=Robotics&rft.description=As+in+the+previous+editions%2C+this+workshop+is+trying+to+be+a+forum+for+multi-disciplinary+research+ranging+from+developmental+psychology+to+neural+sciences+(in+its+widest+sense)+and+robotics+including+computational+studies.+This+is+a+two-fold+aim+of%2C+on+the+one+hand%2C+understanding+the+brain+through+engineering+embodied+systems+and%2C+on+the+other+hand%2C+building+artificial+epigenetic+systems.+Epigenetic+contains+in+its+meaning+the+idea+that+we+are+interested+in+studying+development+through+interaction+with+the+environment.+This+idea+entails+the+embodiment+of+the+system%2C+the+situatedness+in+the+environment%2C+and+of+course+a+prolonged+period+of+postnatal+development+when+this+interaction+can+actually+take+place.+This+is+still+a+relatively+new+endeavor+although+the+seeds+of+the+developmental+robotics+community+were+already+in+the+air+since+the+nineties+(Berthouze+and+Kuniyoshi%2C+1998%3B+Metta+et+al.%2C+1999%3B+Brooks+et+al.%2C+1999%3B+Breazeal%2C+2000%3B+Kozima+and+Zlatev%2C+2000).+A+few+had+the+intuition+%E2%80%93+see+Lungarella+et+al.+(2003)+for+a+comprehensive+review+%E2%80%93+that%2C+intelligence+could+not+be+possibly+engineered+simply+by+copying+systems+that+are+%E2%80%9Cready+made%E2%80%9D+but+rather+that+the+development+of+the+system+fills+a+major+role.+This+integration+of+disciplines+raises+the+important+issue+of+learning+on+the+multiple+scales+of+developmental+time%2C+that+is%2C+how+to+build+systems+that+eventually+can+learn+in+any+environment+rather+than+program+them+for+a+specific+environment.+On+the+other+hand%2C+the+hope+is+that+robotics+might+become+a+new+tool+for+brain+science+similarly+to+what+simulation+and+modeling+have+become+for+the+study+of+the+motor+system.+Our+community+is+still+pretty+much+evolving+and+%E2%80%9Cunder+construction%E2%80%9D+and+for+this+reason%2C+we+tried+to+encourage+submissions+from+the+psychology+community.+Additionally%2C+we+invited+four+neuroscientists+and+no+roboticists+for+the+keynote+lectures.+We+received+a+record+number+of+submissions+(more+than+50)%2C+and+given+the+overall+size+and+duration+of+the+workshop+together+with+our+desire+to+maintain+a+single-track+format%2C+we+had+to+be+more+selective+than+ever+in+the+review+process+(a+20%25+acceptance+rate+on+full+papers).+This+is%2C+if+not+an+index+of+quality%2C+at+least+an+index+of+the+interest+that+gravitates+around+this+still+new+discipline.&rft.publisher=Lund+University+Cognitive+Studies&rft.contributor=Berthouze%2C+Luc&rft.contributor=Kozima%2C+Hideki&rft.contributor=Prince%2C+Christopher+G.&rft.contributor=Sandini%2C+Giulio&rft.contributor=Stojanov%2C+Georgi&rft.contributor=Metta%2C+Giorgio&rft.contributor=Balkenius%2C+Christian&rft.date=2004&rft.type=Conference+Paper&rft.type=NonPeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F4056%2F1%2Fberthouze.pdf&rft.identifier=++Berthouze%2C+Luc+and+Metta%2C+Giorgio++(2004)+Introduction%3A+The+Fourth+International+Workshop+on+Epigenetic+Robotics.++%5BConference+Paper%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F4056%2F
