--- abstract: 'The principal problem of consciousness is how brain processes cause subjective awareness. Since this problem involves subjectivity, ordinary scientific methods, applicable only to objective phenomena, cannot be used. Instead, by parallel application of phenomenological and scientific methods, we may establish a correspondence between the subjective and the objective. This correspondence is effected by the construction of a theoretical entity, essentially an elementary unit of consciousness, the intensity of which corresponds to electrochemical activity in a synapse. Dendritic networks correspond to causal dependencies between these subjective units. Therefore, the structure of conscious experience is derived from synaptic connectivity. This parallel phenomenal/neural analysis provides a framework for the investigation of a number of problems, including sensory inversions, the unity of consciousness, and the nature of nonhuman consciousness.' altloc: - http://www.cs.utk.edu/~mclennan/papers/ICTPN-tr.ps.Z chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: October conference: 'Scale in Conscious Experience: Third Appalachian Conference on Behavioral Neurodynamics' confloc: 'Radford, Virginia' contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: MacLennan given: Bruce J. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1995 date_type: published datestamp: 1999-04-13 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/03/80 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: King given: Joseph honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Pribram given: Karl H. honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 380 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_postscript.png;/380/2/ICTPN.ps full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'consciousness, hard problem, phenomenology, awareness, subjectivity, protophenomenon, protophenomena, phenomeniscon, phenomenisca, objectivity, sensory inversion, unity of consciousness, experience, John Searle, Husserl, John Eccles, psychon' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:52 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 23-43 pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: 'Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Mahwah' refereed: FALSE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 10 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:27:07 subjects: - neuro-psy - phil-mind - phil-sci succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: The investigation of consciousness through phenomenology and neuroscience type: confpaper userid: 359 volume: ~
