"In recent years, there has been a growing interest\nin modelling emotional responses inside the\nperception—action loop of an autonomous robot.\nOne of the motivations of this trend is that an emotional\nsystem could introduce complex decision making\ncapabilities in robots in a faster and more flexible\nway than symbolic deliberative architectures.\nHowever, recent proposals in literature model\nemotions at a very low level (Arkin et al., 2003,\nMurphy et al., 2002). Briefly, a robot emotional\nstate is simply associated with suitable parameters of\nthe reactive behaviors. Instead, emotions may have\nan important role at a higher, conceptual level of\nreasoning of the robot.\nIt is claimed that the emotional states of an\nagent may be related with its internal motivations\n(Balkenius, 1995). For example, an agent has a\npleasure response when its motivations are well satisfied.\nMore in details, a difference is usually made\nbetween primary and higher-order emotions. Primary\nemotions are related with the immediate perceptions\nand motivations of the agent. They can be\nhardwired or, if learned, they are difficultly forgotten.\nHigher-order emotions are instead related with\nthe long—term motivations of the agent; in general\nthey are learned during the operation tasks.\nIn the proposed system, both primary and higher-order\nrobot emotions are represented in terms of\na conceptual space (Gardenfors, 2000). The system\nhas been implemented in the autonomous robot operating\nat the Robotics Laboratory of the University of\nPalermo (a RWI B21 equipped with laser and stereo\nhead). The task of the robot is to offer guided tours\nin the Museum of Electrical Equipments at the Department\nof Electrical Engineering."^^ . "2003" . . "101" . .
