--- abstract: 'Millikan and Wilson argue, for different reasons, that the essential reference to the environment in adaptationist explanations of behavior makes (psychological) individualism inconsistent with evolutionary psychology. I show that their arguments are based on misinterpretations of the role of reference to the environment in such explanations. By exploring these misinterpretations, I develop an account of explanation in evolutionary psychology that is fully consistent with individualism. This does not, however, constitute a full-fledged defense of individualism, since evolutionary psychology is only one explanatory paradigm among many in psychology.' altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Buller given: David J. honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1997-03 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-06-18 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/03/28 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 328 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/text_html.png;/328/1/indy%26ep.htm full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'individualism, behavioral ecology, function, etiological theory, proximate mechanisms, selection' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:49 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 74-95 pubdom: FALSE publication: Philosophy of Science publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 8 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:26:39 subjects: - bio-ani-behav - bio-etho - cog-psy - phil-mind - phil-sci - psy-bio succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: "Individualism and Evolutionary Psychology (or: In Defense of 'Narrow' Functions)" type: journalp userid: 206 volume: 64
