--- abstract: |- The empirical grounding of a typology of languages' rhythm is again a hot issue. The currently popular approach is based on the durations of vocalic and intervocalic intervals and their variability. Despite some successes, many questions remain. The main findings still need to be generalised to much larger corpora including many more languages. But a straightforward continuation of the current work faces many difficulties. Perspectives are outlined for future work, including proposals for the cross-linguistic control of speech rate, improvements on the statistical analyses, and prospects raised by automatic speech processing. altloc: - http://www.lscp.net/persons/ramus/ramus_sp02.pdf chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: 11-13/04/2002 conference: Speech Prosody 2002 confloc: Aix-en-Provence contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Ramus given: Franck honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 2002 date_type: published datestamp: 2002-06-12 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/22/73 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Bel given: Bernard honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Marlien given: Isabelle honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 2273 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/2273/3/ramus_sp02.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: speech; prodody; rhythm; speech rate lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:56 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 115-120 pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: ~ refereed: FALSE referencetext: | \bibitem{Abercr67} D.~Abercrombie. \newblock {\em Elements of general phonetics}. \newblock Aldine, Chicago, 1967. \bibitem{Boling65} D.~Bolinger. \newblock Pitch accent and sentence rhythm. \newblock In D.~Bolinger, editor, {\em Forms of English: Accent, morpheme, order}.
