--- abstract: We offer a preliminary account of the information-based aspects of punctuation marks. We give our initial treatment within the Discourse Representation Theory and its segmented version. We hypothesize that this work will be useful in classifying the informational contributions of punctuation marks and bringing them to bear on the semantic characterization of written discourse. altloc: - http://www.hcrc.ed.ac.uk/publications/wp-2-say.ps.gz chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: June 28 conference: ACL/SIGPARSE International Meeting on Punctuation in Computational Linguistics confloc: 'Santa Cruz, California' contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Say given: Bilge honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Akman given: Varol honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1996 date_type: published datestamp: 1998-07-06 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/02/08 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: - family: Jones given: Bernard honourific: '' lineage: '' eprint_status: archive eprintid: 208 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_postscript.png;/208/2/wp%2D2%2Dsay.ps full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'punctuation, DRT (discourse representation theory), SDRT (segmented discourse representation theory), RST (rhetorical structure theory), information, discouse.' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:53:44 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 49-56 pubdom: FALSE publication: ~ publisher: 'Human Communication Research Centre, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK' refereed: FALSE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 10 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:25:12 subjects: - ling-comput - ling-sem succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: Information-Based Aspects of Punctuation type: confpaper userid: 178 volume: ~
