--- abstract: "In an experiment on perceptual learning, monkeys were given the opportunity to watch on television the 'private behaviour' of another monkey (whcih did not know it was being watched). The subjects were shown monkey X for twenty sessions in a row, followed by monkey Y for twenty sessions, followed by monkey X again for twenty sessions. The subjects' 'interest' in the stimulus monkey remained roughly level within each block of twenty sessions, but increased in a step-like way at the changeover from X to Y, and again from Y to X. These results are interpreted as evidence that the subects gained little or no extra insight into the nature of private behaviour through watching the same monkey in successive sessions; the critical factor in their perceptual education was the comparison between one monkey's behaviour and another's." altloc: [] chapter: ~ commentary: ~ commref: ~ confdates: ~ conference: ~ confloc: ~ contact_email: ~ creators_id: [] creators_name: - family: Humphrey given: Nicholas K honourific: '' lineage: '' - family: Keeble given: Graham R honourific: '' lineage: '' date: 1976 date_type: published datestamp: 2001-08-30 department: ~ dir: disk0/00/00/17/81 edit_lock_since: ~ edit_lock_until: ~ edit_lock_user: ~ editors_id: [] editors_name: [] eprint_status: archive eprintid: 1781 fileinfo: /style/images/fileicons/application_pdf.png;/1781/2/Perception76.pdf full_text_status: public importid: ~ institution: ~ isbn: ~ ispublished: pub issn: ~ item_issues_comment: [] item_issues_count: 0 item_issues_description: [] item_issues_id: [] item_issues_reported_by: [] item_issues_resolved_by: [] item_issues_status: [] item_issues_timestamp: [] item_issues_type: [] keywords: 'perceptual development, perceptual classification, visual exploration, monkeys' lastmod: 2011-03-11 08:54:47 latitude: ~ longitude: ~ metadata_visibility: show note: ~ number: ~ pagerange: 51-56 pubdom: FALSE publication: Perception publisher: ~ refereed: TRUE referencetext: ~ relation_type: [] relation_uri: [] reportno: ~ rev_number: 10 series: ~ source: ~ status_changed: 2007-09-12 16:40:23 subjects: - bio-ani-cog - dev-psy - percep-cog-psy succeeds: ~ suggestions: ~ sword_depositor: ~ sword_slug: ~ thesistype: ~ title: How monkeys acquire a new way of seeing type: journalp userid: 123 volume: 5
