%A Stevan Harnad %J The Sciences %T Explaining the Mind: Problems, Problems %X The mind/body problem is the feeling/function problem: How and why do feeling systems feel? The problem is not just "hard" but insoluble (unless one is ready to resort to telekinetic dualism). Fortunately, the "easy" problems of cognitive science (such as the how and why of categorization and language) are not insoluble. Five books (by Damasio, Edelman/Tononi, McGinn, Tomasello and Fodor) are reviewed in this context. %K mind, consciousness, mind/body problem, language, Zombies, Turing Test, functionalism, feeling, other minds problem, qualia, language, categorization, Chomsky, Fodor, symbol grounding, telekinesis, telepathy, dualism, epiphenomenalism %P 36-42 %V 41 %D 2001 %I New York Academy of Sciences %L cogprints1623
