?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Neuroethology+of+Zooplankton&rft.creator=Bullock%2C+T.H.&rft.subject=Behavioral+Neuroscience&rft.subject=Animal+Behavior&rft.subject=Animal+Cognition&rft.subject=Behavioral+Biology&rft.subject=Neural+Modelling&rft.subject=Neurology&rft.subject=Neurophysiology&rft.subject=Neurophysiology&rft.description=Whereas+the+neural+analysis+of+behavior+of+planktonic+species+and+stages+has+been+relatively+neglected%2C+we+have+many+clues+that+it+is+going+to+be+rich%2C+diverse+and+interesting.+The+aims+of+this+contribution+are+to+defend+that+statement%2C+with+selected+examples%2C+and+to+suggest+that+neural+analysis%2C+particularly+sensory+physiology%2C+has+great+explanatory+power+of+ecologically+significant+behavior.+I+have+to+begin+with+a+personal+note+about+plankton%2C+recalling+the+lasting+impression+made+long+ago+by+a+film+on+invertebrates+in+the+Arctic+where+scyphomedusan+jellyfish+were+pulsing+at+a+rate+well+within+the+range+familiar+in+summer+temperate+waters%2C+warmer+by+20%C2%BA+C.+I+must+have+been+influenced+by+this+observation+and+my+own+experiences+in+a+study+of+the+neural+basis+of+fluctuations+in+the+rate+of+pulsation+of+medusae+(Bullock+1943)%2C+some+of+which+was+made+in+December+1941+in+Pensacola%2C+where+my+wife+and+I+collected+Rhopilema+cruising+at+random+in+the+Sound%2C+stopped+now+and+then+by+Army+bridge+guards+concerned+about+saboteurs+in+that+first+fortnight+after+Pearl+Harbor.+At+any+rate%2C+by+the+early+fifties+about+half+of+my+laboratory+group+was+devoted+to+the+physiological+ecology+of+temperature+acclimation+in+marine+invertebrates.+That+field%2C+which+I+left+in+the+early+sixties%2C+still+offers+a+challenge+in+the+ecologically+fundamental+question+of+why+some+species+are+able+to+acclimate+much+more+than+others.+The+proposal+I+made+in+1955%2C+that+different+rates+in+the+same+organism+acclimate+to+different+degrees%2C+resulting+in+greater+disharmony+in+some+species+than+others%2C+may+still+be+viable+and+most+likely+applies+to+rate+processes+in+sensory+and+central+nervous+functions%2C+among+others.+Medusae+are+large+animals%2C+relatively%2C+although+generally+treated+as+planktonic.+The+first+reaction+from+most+workers+when+neurophysiology+of+plankton+is+mentioned+concerns+their+small+size+or+gelatinous+nature.+The+first+message+I+bring+is+not+new+but+also+not+widely+appreciated.&rft.date=1997&rft.type=Journal+(Paginated)&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=text%2Fhtml&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F127%2F1%2FPlankton.htm&rft.identifier=++Bullock%2C+T.H.++(1997)+Neuroethology+of+Zooplankton.++%5BJournal+(Paginated)%5D+++++&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fcogprints.org%2F127%2F
